Intrapartum
Intrapartum: The Process of Childbirth
Definition: Intrapartum refers to the period of childbirth, encompassing the entire process from the onset of labor until the delivery of the fetus and placenta.
Stages of Intrapartum - Latent Phase: This is the early stage of labor where contractions are mild and irregular. The cervix begins to efface (thin out) and dilate gradually. - Active Phase: Contractions become stronger, more regular, and the cervix dilates more rapidly, usually reaching around 6 cm. - Transition Phase: Intense contractions occur as the cervix approaches full dilation (10 cm). This is a challenging phase for the mother.
Monitoring During Intrapartum - Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring: To ensure the well - being of the fetus. - Maternal Vital Signs: Such as blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature are closely watched.
Interventions - Medical Interventions: May include the use of medications to speed up labor or assist with pain management. - Surgical Interventions: Such as cesarean section in case of complications.
